ABCL Submission to FSANZ: P1056 – Caffeine Review 2nd Call for Submissions
The ABCL has made a submission to Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) in response to Proposal P1056 – Caffeine Review: 2nd Call for Submissions.
FSANZ is reviewing the current permissions for caffeine in sports foods and the general food supply and has released a draft variation to the Food Standards Code.
Proposal P1056 aims to address concerns raised under Urgent Proposal P1054, which was developed in response to risks associated with pure and highly concentrated caffeine products. A key amendment proposed in the draft is to explicitly permit the addition of caffeine to Formulated Supplementary Sports Foods (FSSF), with a maximum of 200 mg in a one day quantity. This change would also introduce new compositional and labelling requirements for FSSF products containing added caffeine.
The ABCL supports FSANZ’s proposal and the draft variation to the Food Standards Code. This submission underscores our commitment to evidence-based regulation that prioritises public health, builds consumer confidence, and fosters product innovation—while also delivering consistency and clarity for beverage manufacturers.
